·        The Christmas Art and Craft Donation Table items, now located in the Gallery, are for sale or can be picked up by owners. The money from the items purchased will go toward the PLAG scholarship fund.  Left over items which have not been claimed by the January meeting will be donated to an agency of PLAG's choice. As discussed in previous meetings, future Christmas Craft Fairs will no longer include a Donation Table. If you have items you would like to pick up prior to the January meeting, please contact Margarete Seagraves at seagml@compdsn.com or 487-1329.

·        Several PLAG members joined John Defrancesco to enjoy painting together in the Vaile Gallery (PLAG House) on November 18.  There will not be a gathering in December. The next session will be Thursday, January 8 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

James McNeill Whistler, in addition to being a talented artist, was also well known for his acid tongue and quick wit making him one of the most quotable artists:

At a party one evening James Whistler found himself buttonholed by a notorious bore. "You know, Mr. Whistler," the man declared, "I passed your house last night." "Thank you," Whistler replied before moving on.

James McNeill Whistler was once visited in his Paris studio by an American millionaire intent on procuring some art for his expansive home. "How much," the man asked, gazing around the cluttered studio, "for the lot?" "Four million," the artist declared. "What!" the collector cried. Whistler's explanation? "My posthumous prices."

While studying at West Point, it came to light in the course of an examination that James Whistler was unable to date the battle of Buena Vista. "What!" one of his examiners exclaimed. "Suppose you went out to dinner and the company got talking about the Mexican War, and you, a West Point man, did not know the date of this battle. What would you do!?" "I should refuse," Whistler replied, "to associate with people who talked of such things at dinner."

Whistler was once approached by a female admirer. "I only know of two painters in the world," she gushed, "yourself and Velasquez." Whistler's reply? "Why drag in Velasquez?"

One day James Whistler was dismayed to learn that his recent order of blank canvases had been lost in the mail. Whistler was asked whether they were of any value. "Not yet," he wryly replied. "Not yet..."

James Whistler once found himself at a party engaged in conversation with a Boston snob: "And where were you born, Mr. Whistler?" she asked. "Lowell, Massachusetts," he replied. "Whatever possessed you to be born in a place like that!" the woman exclaimed. "The explanation is quite simple," Whistler dryly replied. "I wished to be near my mother."

Frederic Leighton, an artist noted for his meticulous execution, once remarked to James Whistler that he seemed to leave his pictures in a sketchy, unfinished state. "Why don't you ever finish them?" he asked.

"My dear Leighton," Whistler replied, "why do you ever begin yours?"

Not surprisingly, James Whistler and Oscar Wilde, both notorious attention-loving wits, frequently exchanged nasty barbs. "I wish I had said that!" Wilde exclaimed of one of Whistler's wilier witticisms. "You will, Oscar," Whistler replied. "You will!"
