Messagefrom Margarete Seagraves:

First of all, let me express my sincereappreciation to all of PLAGÕs Christmas Craft Fair Volunteers! It took all ofyou, the members and supporters of PLAG, to make the 38th Christmas Arts &Craft Fair, once again, a great success! We received many positive comments from visitors and vendors whoexpressed how much they enjoyed this event. Only through your commitment andparticipation and in working together prior, during, and after the event, couldwe be successful. The team effort was great and everyoneÕs help is greatlyappreciated. A big THANK YOU to all of you.

The question I have been asked numerous times is:how did we do? The answer is: very well. Our sales were equal and maybe alittle more than last yearÕs event. The details will be reported in our nextmeeting, November 12.

The December meeting will be replaced by thePLAGÕs annual Christmas party, to be held at the La Zingara Restaurant at theGleneagle Golf Club. Thank you, Tsilla, for coordinating this annual event.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Novembermeeting,

Margarete Seagraves, President

AndNow a Word from John De FrancescoÉ

ARE COMMISSIONS PART OF YOUR ART SALES?

During this tougheconomic climate for selling art through traditional channels, many artistshave sought more commission work for income.  Commissions can apply to almost any art specialty:paintings, sculptures, clay art, photography, quilts, fabrics, crafts and soon.

Many artists thriveon the added income they make from commission work, while others tell horrorstories about Òclients from hellÓ who were so unbearable or demanding that thejobs were money-losing propositions.

The concept ofcommissions seems simple enough, but sometimes execution and delivery canbecome complicated.  Normally, aclient would retain you to create a custom artwork based on specificparameters.  Too often, however, miscommunication and differences of opinion and taste can lead to disagreement overthe end product.  Worse, adissatisfied client may not pay the agreed upon fees.

Many pitfalls canbe avoided through careful planning and good business execution.  Here are some ways you can ensurecommission work goes well for you and the client:

n      Never accept a commission from a third-party (e.g., agallery). Always deal directly with the client.

n      As with any good business dealing, get the assignmentin writing to avoid Òwho said whatÓ later.  Remember, an oral/written agreement can be legally binding.  If you are not comfortable creating anagreement, consult an attorney.

n      List the criteria for the work, such as size, materials, colors, framing, deadlines, delivery and any otherspecifications.  Be as detailed andspecific as possible.  For example, color requirements need to be exact (burnt sienna), not general (Sante Fe-stylebrown).

n      Detail the fees and payment schedule.  Consider presenting fees for sizeslarger and smaller than originally specified to give the client more choices.Take a deposit before beginning work, with the agreement that the balance willbe due upon delivery.  Specifywhether and how much you will charge for changes ordered by the client.

n      Show the client similar work youÕve done beforeaccepting a commission so they agree they like your style.

n      Optional, but a good idea, is to present to the clienttwo or three studies that will conceptualize the composition, styling andcolors.  Have the client select theone that best meets his/her needs; base the final work on that rendering.

One question thatarises is what to do upon delivery if the client doesnÕt like the work.  The answer can only be based on apolicy you establish.  One methodis to advise the client (in the written agreement) that they donÕt have toaccept the work; but youÕll retain the advance deposit and the artwork.  The advance will compensate somewhatfor your work time and you can exhibit and sell the work.
