Program: June Heimsoth was born in Colorado Springs and raised on a dairy farm east of Falcon, Colorado.  She is past President of the Colorado Springs Art Guild and winner of several awards in juried art exhibits.  She studied with George Molstad for years, has taken workshops from Olvenas Berberian and from Michael Untiedt, and is currently mentored by Martha Mans.  Her paintings have been exhibited at the Colorado State Fair, Pikes Peak Center, Colorado Springs Airport, U.S. Olympic CenterÕs Hall of Fame, the Parade of Homes, and are in private collections across the United States.

JuneÕs program is color, and she teaches mixing all colors from three primaries + white. After you learn this system you can mix better colors even with a full palette.

And now a word from John De FrancescoÉ

TEST YOUR COLOR KNOWLEDGE

The proper use of color may be one of the greatest challenges faced by artists, regardless of the medium in which they work.  Often, we learn something about color, such as mixing, application or placement, only to later forget it when creating a work of art.  In truth, the study of color can be, and should be, a lifelong pursuit.  And hand-in-hand with learning is the need to practice what you learn.  The process is a lot like studying music; unless one practices, one never will memorize or play a piece well.

So, just to whet your appetite for learning more about color, following is a10-question quiz you can use to gauge your level of understanding.  If you get all 10 correct, youÕre an ace and way ahead of the rest of us.

(The answers are at the end of this newsletter).

1.   All colors are present in nature and reflect off of various objects; but what is the general

reflection color in nature? a. blue, b. yellow, c. red, d. violet.

2.   Adding white to a pigment (color) will make it appear brighter?

      a. true, b. false.

3.   You can desaturate the intensity of a color by:

adding black, b. adding white, c. adding the complementary color,

d. adding another color, e. thinning (water or mineral spirits),

f. all of the above.

4.   Which of the following reds reflects the most orange? a. permanent rose,

quinacradone red, c. cadmium red.

5.   Which of the following blues reflects the most green? a. ultramarine blue,

cerulean blue, c. phthalo blue.

6.   Opacity and transparency are useful characteristics of paints; knowing which

paints are opaque and which are transparent (or semi-transparent) can help you       control their effect in your art.  Next to popular paint colors listed below, circle ÒOÓ for those that are opaque and ÒTÓ for those that are transparent:

      Cadmium yellow light: O-T

      Cadmium orange:             O-T

      Alizarin crimson:               O-T

      Cerulean blue:                   O-T

      Ultramarine blue:               O-T

      Phthalo blue:                     O-T

      Cadmium red light:            O-T

      Phthalo green:                   O-T

      Titanium white:                 O-T

      7.   In glazing, if you first paint a layer of ultramarine blue and later overlay it with

hansa yellow light, the resultant color will most likely be:

violet, b. green, c. black, d. yellow-green.

8.   A white circle will appear brighter against which color background?

yellow, b. green, c. red-violet, d. blue-violet.

9.   If orange and blue are used together, the pairing is referred to as:

analogous, b. complementary, c. tertiary, d. split-complementary.

    10.   Which of the following pairings produce a good black color?

a.Ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson.

b.Cadmium red light and Phthalo blue.

c.Alizarin crimson and phthalo green.
